This really depends on how it is going, how many other things I need to be doing with my time and how badly my boss wants it done. Sometimes projects can take 3-4 years before we do enough experiments to figure out how all of the bits work. Sometimes the project is over in a few weeks as we can quickly show that it will be too difficult for current technology, and available equipment or time that we have to put towards it.
