Sandra Greive answered on 5 Mar 2017:

I started working on engineering protein nanopores about a year and a half ago, on and off. We’ve been talking about the idea with our collaborators at Northeastern University (Boston) for about 2 years all up. Back in March 2015 we submitted a preliminary proposal asking the British Biotechnology and Biosciences Research Council (BBSRC) if they might be interested in supporting this nanopore project. BBSRC invited us to send them a full application, so in August 2015 I was lucky enough to go to Boston to run some test experiments to see if our protein was a good candidate. And it was! We used this data to write a full grant proposal to the BBSRC and they agreed to fund this for the next three years. I have been working on this project full time since September.
