We don’t know! Just that it has energy and mass (like normal matter) but doesn’t interact with normal matter in any way, or give us any other way to check it’s there. It’s been invented to ‘fill in the gaps’ between our understanding of how the galaxy is (in terms of rotations, shapes etc) and what our models predict them to look like.

James is right – Dark Matter (and by extension Dark Energy) is something that helps us to balance equations.
