Silicon is the most widely used, as it was the first to be researched.
There are lots of different alloys (mixtures of elements), such as Cadmium Telluride (CdTe), Gallium Arsenide (GaAs), Copper-Indium-Sulfide (CIS) and Copper-Indium-Gallium-Sulfide (CIGS), and my material Copper-Zinc-Tin-Sulfide (CZTS).
There is also a type of material called Perovskite, which has showed improvements over 10 years which some materials have taken 50 years to achieve. Perovskites come in lots of different combinations, and is far too complicated for me!
