I honestly do not remember when I had the exact research idea for my project. However, I did inspire quite a bit when I was looking and applying for PhDs and I read a paper which talked about using LC/GC-MS based techniques for metabolite identification and how it is done. That got me and then one thing led to another…

I was given my general topic, and the direction that I need to head in, but I don’t have anything that is 100% ‘mine’ – Im just starting to collect useful data, so after this or maybe the next round of tests, Ill start deciding where I want to take it.
What that will be, I do not know! It all depends on the results Im collecting 🙂

I was reading papers from other groups and thought that our protein would be much better for DNA nanopore work than the ones currently being used. What better protein to use a DNA nanopore than a natural DNA nanopore from a virus that lives in a salty hot spring? I talked to my boss, and we got in touch with some physicists in Boston to see if they’d like to work with us. We wrote a grant and here we are….. making protein new proteins with practical uses.
