At first my parents thought I was trying not to get a job by staying at university for a few more years, but then I explained to them how what I do IS a job, and what I do every day. Once they realised that I’m training to be a scientist, they were very proud indeed!

Of course they are. In fact, they encouraged me to carry on to advance in my career. I don’t say they understand 100% what it is that I do. But with the limited understanding of science that they have, they are pleased with the path I have chosen. I sometimes sit with them and explain my experiments to them, it is encouraging when they sit there listening to you and sometimes ask questions too!
