current thinking is that the brain is a little like a new breakthrough in electronics, called memoristors. So each neuron in the brain can store a little information, with areas of the brain working together to store certain kinds of information and multiple areas working together to recall memories.

Each neuron or brain cell has many long thin projections, some with many branches and some with none, kind of like antennae. These allow this cell to communicate, by lots of little chemical signals, with many other cells or whole sets of cells at once. These connections are constantly changing depending on the memories that we lay down based on our experiences. The combination and pattern of this neuron connection network is like a code for memory. Neurologists are only just starting to figure out how this works on a cellular/molecular level. Another wide open area of unanswered questions for future generations of scientists to explore.
