When you approach a problem, first you identify what you think are the most likely reasons for what has happened. The machines that we use may be able to tell us multiple things, but they tell us them in different ways, so different machines tell us different things.

The more tests you do, the more things you can say are NOT causing your problem. Sometimes its obvious and you test just to confirm, sometimes you can be completely flummoxed.
We have group meetings where we sit round and discuss problems we are having, or how we should do things next.

The whole thing is a very meticulous process, where we do one thing at a time until we have found our answer. Sometimes it can take a veyr long time to find something out, but that just makes it better when/if you finally do!

Lewis has got it right. Mostly its about trial and error, figuring out what doesn’t work. Talking about it other people can be really useful as they might have had similar problems and know the solution. It works a bit this way for life as well as science.
