The most interesting experiment I’ve ever done was testing the effect of light/dark on photosynthesis and starch production when I was 7 years old. We put foil over half of a leaf for a few days. The leaf under the foil became a very light green colour compared to the rest of the leaf (dark green). We put the leaf in boiling water for a few minutes, then washed it in hot ethanol and then cold ethanol to remove the chlorophyll (green pigment). Next we tested for starch content by soaking the leaf with iodine solution. Iodine turns starch a blue-black colour. The part of the leaf covered by the foil contained no starch, while the part that was exposed to sunlight did contain starch.

I like the conservation of energy experiment – you cant get a big weight on rope, hold it up to your face, let it swing away and come flying back to you, but it will never hit you! Proof that energy is always conversed!
