Sandra Greive answered on 8 Mar 2017:

Predoctoral is used to describe research students who are working towards their PhD (also knows as a Doctorate or a Doctor of Philosphy). Postdoctoral is used to describe research scientists who have already completed their PhD. I have already completed my PhD so my job is referred to as postdoctoral.
