In my own learning, I have found that visual representations and movies really help me understand and think about scientific problems. 3D glasses and images have been used in structural biology for a long time as way of looking at molecules and seeing how the amino acids interact with each other to form a stable active protein. Virtual Reality is the natural next step. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, but it wasn’t until I went to a conference last year and a grad student that was there had coded his own 3D visualisation of his proteins into a portable VR (I think it was the Occulus Rift). It was amazing! And I get to see these things on 3D screens almost everyday. Imagine how cool it would be to show people at science festivals the same thing! Imagine how cool it would be to have software that would take any structure from the protein data bank (http://www.rcsb.org/pdb/home/home.do) and display it on any VR unit anywhere!
